Please be advised that non working dues have been increased to $25 for retired members and $35 for active members per month. This increase was voted on and approved at the January Union meeting. In addition, the negotiating committee will be nominated and elected at the February Union meeting for the upcoming ICI contract negotiations.   

The following is a list of courses that are tentatively scheduled. Please review and sign up as soon as possible to reserve your seat; other courses will be added if numbers permit. Sign up online or call 902-442-0120.


Sprinkler System Installer

Block 2 training is scheduled to begin on January 9, all eligible Sprinkler apprentices should register as soon as possible.

OSSA Training

The Training Centre will be offering Fall Protection, Confined Space and Elevated Work Platform training to unemployed members who wish to work in Alberta on travel card. These courses are 1 day each and will be held on weekdays in late January.

Nova Scotia Skills Competition

Apprentices who are interested in competing in the NS Skills Competition please contact the Training Centre for details. (Registration open from January 8-March 9)

Cross Connection Control Re-Certification

AWWA Cross Connection Control Testers must be recertified every five years. This course provides the opportunity to update cross connection control knowledge and skills and then to write the required examination for re-certification. Course duration is 15 hours and is intended for members with certifications that are expiring. This course will begin on January 10, at 5 pm. (eligible members have been contacted)

Introductory Pressure Pipe Welding

This 60 hour introductory level program is intended for members who wish to learn basic SMAW pipe welding techniques. Students must have prior SMAW welding experience. This course will begin on January 15, and will be held Monday-Friday for 2 weeks, 8 am - 4 pm.

G-7 Gas

At the end of this 60 hour course each student will write the G-7 gas exam. You must be a Journeyman Plumber or Steamfitter to be eligible for this training. Course starts on January 20, and will be held Tuesday and Wednesday nights from 6-9 pm and every other Saturday 8 am - 4 pm. This certification is required to install gas piping in Nova Scotia.

Heritage Course

This course is compulsory for all new members. Students will learn the history of unionism, the UA Standard for Excellence and their responsibility as union members. Next course February 15, 5-9 pm

Forklift

This certification course is intended to teach members how to safely operate a forklift. Next course April 7, 8 am-4 pm. (Work boots required)

Pipe Fabrication

This 40 hour course is designed for members who wish to enhance their pipefitting skills. Students will learn how to interpret spool sheet drawings and correctly prepare steel pipe and fittings for various welded joints, such as socket welds, butt welds, mitered joints and saddles. Students will assemble various welded piping spools. This course will begin on Feb. 27 and will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights, 6-9 pm and every other Saturday 8 am-4 pm.

Brazing & Silfos

This 8 hour course offers students theory and practical training on proper procedures utilized to join copper to copper as well as copper to steel. Next course March 4, 8 am-4 pm.

Tube Fitting Installation Certification Training

This 3 hour course will cover compression fitting function, tube preparation, fitting make up, fitting remake, and trouble shooting. Students will receive a certification that will allow them to install instrumentation fittings up to 5000 psi. This course will be held on April 5 at 6 pm and is open to 3rd and 4th year apprentices as well as journeyman.

Plumbing Code Update

This 6 hour course will include a review as well as changes to the 2015 National Plumbing Code. Next course April 18, 24, 25, 6-9 pm.

Industrial Rigging

This 40 hour course is intended for experienced riggers only. It will include theoretical and practical training covering the best rigging practices, calculating centers of gravity, sling stress, crane set up and the use of tuggers, jacks and rollers. Students will be required to pass a written and practical test to receive a certificate. This course will begin on April 9, and will be held Monday and Wednesday nights from 6-9 pm and every other Saturday 8 am-4 pm.

NFPA 13 Update

This course will review and promote discussion of changes within the 2013 edition of the NFPA 13 Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems. In addition, changes affecting the current Sprinkler fitter and how these changes impact the installation of future systems will be covered. Course is scheduled for March 26 & 28, 6-9 pm. Members who complete the course will receive a copy of the 2013 NFPA 13 code book.
