It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald “Don/Donnie” Misener, on January 21, 2025. Born at the Halifax infirmary, NS on March 14, 1960, to Christine (Martin) and predeceased by our father Russell Misener; Donnie was a loving Father to Angelina (Mike) Allen. A much-loved Grandfather to Isaac, Gracie, Millie, and Archie. A Brother, Brother-in-law and Foster-Brother to Theresa (Bob) Rogers, Dianne (Paul) Aalders, Wilfred (Cheryl) Misener, Matthew (Pamela) Smith, An Uncle to Krista, Jamie, Jenny, Ashley, Dustin, Tia, Bobby, Carli and Jake.

Donnie’s world at an early age was filled with boxing, baseball, hockey, pool, and motorbikes. He also loved to play his acoustic guitar and particularly having a singalong with whoever wanted to join in. Today I was reminded by my niece that Free Falling by Tom Petty was one song he enjoyed with his daughter Angie and Ashley while driving to Elderbank to visit his mother. He loved Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jim Croce, and Van Morrison; and would often share his love of the old tunes online with friends.

For many years Donnie’s world would be dedicated to his work as a welder. Donnie was a proud member of the Canadian Piping Trades Union Local 56 for over forty years.  His career took a drastic turn on December 10th, 2006, after a massive stroke. He had to learn a new way of living and I thank all the friends and family that helped him with his journey. He was very close with his neighbors the Snow family, and they looked out for each other through the years. He was an incredibly resourceful brother when he wanted to be and could apply his skills to many difficult tasks. If you knew Donnie well, you would know he would give you the shirt off his back even if it was freezing rain, he showed this compassion in many ways.

He was my mentor in life growing up, and I always looked up to him for direction and support growing up. Moving forward I will put my hands together and ask for his guidance when in need; especially while watching a Toronto / Montreal game and learning the Maple Leaf’s won. Brother they may win the cup this year if you help!!

Donnie’s family would like to thank all who recognized the challenges he faced and helped in times of need and crisis. We would also like to thank Cindy McAllister and Thelma Snow for their part in looking after him even when he was not aware.

Cremation will take place and we will have a private celebration of life around the ponds that he helped build and fished on my mother’s property overlooking the Musquodoboit River in the early spring/summer.

Memorial donations can be made to Autism Nova Scotia (austismnovascotia.ca) or Heart & Stroke Foundation (heartandstroke.ca)

William (Billy) Bernard Murphy Jr, 54, of Beaver Bank NS passed away Sunday, January 12th at the Victoria General Hospital. Born in Halifax NS, he was the son of Bernie and Sheila Murphy. He had been battling appendix cancer for 13 months.

Billy was an active little boy who was described as “energetic”. His parents Bernie and Sheila fondly recounted him walking at 9 months, and about finding him in unusual places such as the top of the fridge or rolling down the driveway in the car that was out of gear. His brother, Anthony, was sometimes his partner in crime.

Growing up, Billy spent his days outdoors playing road hockey, biking, swimming in Tucker Lake, and playing baseball at the Beaver Bank ball field with his friends from Danny Drive. These close bonds and friendships were maintained throughout Billy’s life. The stories and antics were always entertaining. He cherished the relationships from those days and spoke of them often.

After high school, Billy attended NSCC Akerley where he earned his Red Seal in welding. He went on to work as a proud member of Local 56 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union for 27 years. Later, he went back to school and received his Red Seal in Pipefitting. He worked at the Halifax Irving Shipyard for 13 years, briefly as a white hat, but was mainly on the tools. He was well respected due to his strong work ethic and humour. He was loved by so many there. Two days before his death, he was honored by a parade of his dear friends and coworkers with a final goodbye. They have named an annual hockey tournament at Irving after him “The Billy Murphy Memorial Hockey Tournament.”

Billy adored his family. He called his wife, Lee, “his rock” and told many people that having her around made him feel better when he was sick. His daughter, Jana, was a daddy’s girl though they often butted heads being similar in personality. He loved his “Nanny-May” very, very much. His son, Cameron, was like his father in that, he loved the outdoors and riding his four-wheeler. They spent a lot of time together doing four-wheeler runs with groups of close friends.

He loved camping and campfires. At the campground or in the backyard of the house, he could be found on summer evenings by the fire, listening to his playlist of music, drinking his Cuban rum and smoking his Cuban cigar. Scooby was often by his side, and later, Jax would sit briefly or at least long enough to have a ball thrown to fetch.

Billy was an avid hunter. During hunting season, he would check his trail camera regularly and would update his father about the big doe or the 8-point buck that he saw by his blind. In the last months of his life, he found joy sitting peacefully in the woods. He didn’t get the 8-point this year but he did manage to get a doe.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lee; his son, Cameron; and his daughter, Jana; his parents, Bernie and Sheila Murphy; his brother, Anthony (Denise); his half-brothers, Carey (Lisa) and Steven (Lesley); parents in-law, Scot & Nancy Jennings; sister in-law, Erin (DongWoo); and nieces & nephews Alara, Myla, Sam, Sarah, Garrett, Mira & Nico.

He is predeceased by his maternal grandmother, Emma-Jean Defry; paternal grandparents, Anthony & Cecelia (Currie) Murphy; uncle, Gerald Whitman; and aunt, Veronica (Murphy) Mosher.

There will be no visitation. The funeral will be held on Saturday, January 18th at 2pm at Faith Baptist Church (299 Stokil Drive in Lower Sackville NS). Rev Borden Scott will be officiating. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

A special thank you goes out to the wonderful doctors who cared for Billy. His outstanding oncologist Dr Sheridan and her nurse Madison, his surgeon Dr Knapp, his respirologist Dr Houston and his nurse Coco and finally Dr Rivers-Bowerman who went above and beyond to help when Billy started to decline.

He was so lucky to have so much love and support. There are so many amazing people who have helped him throughout this tumultuous year. Thank you, you know who you are.

Burton passed away peacefully with Jocelyn by his side on October 13, 2024. It was an honour to support Burton through his two-year battle with cancer. He was 69 years old when he died, and I can still hear him saying, “I’m not ready to go yet.”

Those who were fortunate enough to know Burton, to spend time with him and call him their friend were lucky. He was a kind, positive, strong, patient and generous person.

Burton was born and lived most of his life in Halifax. Just after high school he worked for his uncle at the Bill Lynch Fair. That hard work inspired him to continue his education and complete his B.A. After that he realized that education was very important. He tried his luck at fishing; bought a boat and lost his shirt. He worked many jobs with Mitchell & McRae Ltd. (his dad’s company), Local 56, Boiler Maker’s, and the Dockyard. Burton worked away from home often, travelling across Canada, to Bermuda, France and Boston.

Burton was not one for showmanship. He was genuine and down to earth, did many good deeds and was never boastful. He enjoyed teaching others how to do just about anything from baking bread, growing garlic, house building to gardening. He saw the best in the people he met, family, friends and strangers alike.

He got a motorcycle and together we enjoyed our trips and rallies to Digby. We vacationed annually in Cuba for many years and had our vacation friends from England, Scotland, New Brunswick and Gold River NS. After he retired, he was able to fit in some fishing and hunting, as he loved doing both. He faced his cancer with strength and optimism. As his illness progressed, he took up knife sharpening as he could do that from his chair.

Burton lived life to the fullest. The advice that he believed in and would pass on to others is: Be kind always and help others when you can. Expect nothing in return, except knowing that you helped another person along the way. Pay it forward!

He is survived by brother, David Rhyno; sisters, Ann Borden and Gail Gibb.

Many thanks to the Hematology Dept.; Dr. Fraga & Trish Brown, all staff at the VG hospital floor 8A & Medical Day unit, The Lodge That Gives and VON Services. A special thanks to Dartmouth General Hospital Emergency for their support during Burton’s final hours.

Join us for a ‘Celebration of life’ held on November 5, 2024, in UA Local 56, 31 Ragus Road Dartmouth from 2pm to 4pm. Please bring your stories to share with Jocelyn and his family.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Canadian Cancer Society or The Lodge That Gives.

Lyall Russell MacGregor of Halifax, Nova Scotia
1950-2024

Please join us in celebrating the life of our beloved husband, father, brother, granddad, uncle, cousin, coworker, friend, and neighbor, Lyall MacGregor.  Lyall was born on March 2, 1950, to the late Alexander (Alec) and Helen (Dewar) MacGregor.  He passed away peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax on July 24, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.  Lyall was a force of nature and a friend, confidant, and mentor to many. He leaves behind a treasure trove of memories, wisdom, insights, warmth, and love. His authentic and no-nonsense approach to life was a true gift.  Lyall and Sharon were married for 52 years and built a beautiful and full life together with their two daughters, Paula and Michelle. When it was time for his daughters to create their own families, he welcomed Trevor, Aubrey, and his four grandchildren—Hannah, Zachary, Ethan, and Helen—with loving and open arms. He was the best husband, father, father-in-law, and grandad you could imagine. He was also loved and cherished by his brothers and sisters, through birth and through marriage, his many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins. He left a lasting impact on his family.  Lyall was a proud plumber and pipefitter and an active member of the United Association Local 56 union. He loved his work and the people he worked with over the years in the Maritimes and out west. He was dedicated to building strong teams and quality work and was a mentor to many. He was committed to learning and spent many hours upgrading his skills and encouraging others to do the same.  Lyall was a community builder. He grew up on Big Island in Merigomish and was a country boy at heart. He moved to the city when he was a teenager to go to school and spent most of his life in a home he built in sunny Hammonds Plains. Over the years, he was also at home at the shore in Pugwash, on Big Island, and in the Yukon. He created an extensive network of loved ones. Lyall was able to make any gathering special, usually with baked goods in tow. He was always one to pick up the phone and, in later years, his quick wit and the simple joys of life were often shared by text.  His dedication to excellence also showed through his involvement in his family, the shore community, the union, and square dancing. It was impossible to keep up with Lyall, and we all wondered how he did so much. He put many kilometers on a full fleet of vehicles over the years.  He loved to travel, go to the beach, host a campfire, work on a project, mow the grass, go to a dance, go for a stroll, coordinate union events, participate in union meetings, take in a kids hockey or soccer game, go to a show, play a game of golf, visit someone in need, or talk about nothing over a glass of rum or a cup of coffee. He was active right up until his last days, which is a comfort to us all.

We are forever grateful to all the doctors, nurses, and health professionals that took good care of Lyall over the years. We are especially grateful for the doctors and nurses at the Queen Elizabeth II – Dr. Mark Bartolacci, Dr. Nix, Dr. Raiche-Marsden, Alan Wong and Emma Haines – who took care of Lyall, and our family, in his last days.

We are hosting a casual, joyous, no-nonsense celebration of life on August 1, 2024, from 3 pm to 6 pm at the Local 56 union hall at 31 Ragus Road in Dartmouth. There will also be a gathering for family and friends in Whitehorse later this summer.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada or the Local 56 Scholarship.
