Local 56 Hosts 2023 Skills Competitions

Local 56 hosted the Sprinkler fitter and Steamfitter/Pipefitter skills competitions for Skills Canada Nova Scotia on March 9, 2023. Apprentices and pre-employment students competed in the 1-day event to showcase their talents and skills in their trades. This year the participants all worked very hard to complete their projects and are all on their way to a bright career in the pipe trades. Local 56 is very proud to host these events that help showcase the talents of all competitors. Winners for the Steamfitter/Pipefitter trades are. Gold – Josh Purcell, Silver – Joseph Petrie and Bronze went to Jeremy Thorne. In the Sprinkler fitter competition, we only had the 2 competitors and they both worked hard all day and made the choice very hard. Gold was awarded to Grace Westenberger and Silver to Justin Carlton. Congratulations to all who took part in this year’s competition.

UA Local 56 would like to recognize and commend our apprentices, Tyler Hayes, Riley Brown and Devin Vanderkooi who competed at this year’s competition. Although they didn’t finish first in their trade category they all represented Local 56 in a very positive and professional way. On May 26th and 27th the Skills Canada National Competition was held in Vancouver British Colombia. This event included more than 300 competitors from across Canada who participated in 35 skilled trade and technology competitions. This year Nova Scotia was represented by Steamfitter/Pipefitter apprentice Riley Brown, Plumber apprentice Devin Vanderkooi, and Sprinklerfitter apprentice Tyler Hayes. All three were at their best and displayed incredible skill in their competition areas throughout the 2-day event. When the results were announced at the closing ceremony Riley and Devin claimed gold medals and Tyler was awarded a silver medal. This is a very impressive showing by our apprentices on a national stage and the membership of Local 56 is very proud of this outstanding achievement.

Next up for Riley, Devin and Tyler is the UA National Apprentice Competition being held at Local 853 in Ontario June 18-24. This competition will determine who will represent District 6 at the UA International Competition being held in Ann Arbor Michigan in August.
