Sprinkler apprentice Tyler Hayes was named this year’s winner of the Standard For Excellence award at the UA National Apprentice Competition. The Standard for Excellence trophy is awarded to the Competitor that best exemplifies the tenets and values of the UA as determined by their peers. Points considered are attitude, professionalism, quality of work, and any other quality personally held in high regard for a tradesperson. Way to go Tyler!

UA Local 56 would like to recognize and commend our apprentices, Tyler Hayes, Riley Brown and Devin Vanderkooi who competed at this year’s competition. Although they didn’t finish first in their trade category they all represented Local 56 in a very positive and professional way. These individuals have shown tremendous skills and have a long and successful career ahead of them in the UA. Great job Brothers!

This week, Local 56 apprentices are competing at the UA National Apprentice Competition being held at Local 853 in Ontario. The 3-day competition will include practical projects as well as a theory exam. More news to follow when the results are announced this Friday!

On May 26th and 27th the Skills Canada National Competition was held in Vancouver British Colombia. This event included more than 300 competitors from across Canada who participated in 35 skilled trade and technology competitions. This year Nova Scotia was represented by Steamfitter/Pipefitter apprentice Riley Brown, Plumber apprentice Devin Vanderkooi, and Sprinklerfitter apprentice Tyler Hayes. All three were at their best and displayed incredible skill in their competition areas throughout the 2-day event. When the results were announced at the closing ceremony Riley and Devin claimed gold medals and Tyler was awarded a silver medal. This is a very impressive showing by our apprentices on a national stage and the membership of Local 56 is very proud of this outstanding achievement.

Next up for Riley, Devin and Tyler is the UA National Apprentice Competition being held at Local 853 in Ontario June 18-24. This competition will determine who will represent District 6 at the UA International Competition being held in Ann Arbor Michigan in August.

Best of luck and congratulations on what you have accomplished!

The Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency (NSAA) offers two programs aimed at providing important information about Nova Scotia’s apprenticeship system to new apprentices and employers.

Are you a new apprentice?

The NSAA requires new apprentices to complete a 5-part mini-course packed with detailed information essential for navigating the apprenticeship system in Nova Scotia. While it is intended for registered apprentices, anyone who is curious about apprenticeship as a post-secondary educational pathway is welcome to take a look. Registration is not required.
